Pristina – Following his meeting with European Member of Parliament Doris Pack, SRSG Michael Steiner shared a “Europe Day” message with the people of Kosovo.
“The European Union was created 52 years ago today, founded on the basic principles of respect for democratic institutions, human rights, and the rule of law,” said Steiner. “These fundamental values, as well as a diversity of cultures and traditions, have formed the basis of European integration over the last 50 years.”
“As Europe moves into the 21st century, these traditions remain the source of its strength.”
“For Kosovo, Europe Day is an opportunity to look back over the last few years and reflect on the progress that has been made in this direction: the Provisional Institutions of Self Government are in place and working, infrastructure is being rebuilt and the economy is turning around. This is thanks to the hard work of the people of Kosovo and European Union assistance.”
“I see the visible results of this progress wherever I go: thriving small and medium-sized enterprises, reconstructed houses and rebuilt roads. I know all of this would have been impossible without the entrepreneurship and energy of the people of Kosovo.”
“But Kosovo must continue this work. The Future of Kosovo is in Europe. The European Union provides a unique model for achieving common goals, while respecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
“Europe has always formed strong links with its neighbors. It now looks to expand its achievements and values with countries and peoples beyond its borders. In this context Europe seeks to build closer ties with the people of South Eastern Europe.”
“Kosovo needs Europe and Europe needs Kosovo to continue on its path toward democracy and European values. I will take this message to Kosovo’s leaders when I address the parliament later today.”
