Germia Investors Offered Reimbursement

UNMIK/PR/494

UNMIK today offered people who have spent money on the refurbishment of the Germia building in Pristina partial reimbursement for their investment. The people involved are asked to submit invoices to be scrutinized for proof of work completed.

The Germia building was taken over by UNMIK in late December last year in order to prepare for the installation of offices for the Joint Interim Administrative Structure and UNMIK functions. While rightful ownership had not been established, it remained UNMIK’s responsibility under Security Resolution 1244 to administer the building. The workers and management had ignored several requests to stop the renovation.

Who ever claim the rights to property in Kosovo must be able to provide valid documentation. UNMIK has found that the documentation provided in this case has not been sufficient to determine ownership of the premises. According to UNMIK Regulation 1999/1 and as amended 2000/54, all property of, or registered in the name of, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia or the Republic of Serbia, or socially owned property, is subject to UNMIK’s administration.

UNMIK has also asked the representatives for the people who claim rights to the building to submit lists of workers available for work connected with the management of the building. UNMIK is willing to employ workers for maintenance and other functions.

There have been numerous demonstrations in front of the building, and UNMIK Police has deployed officers to prevent against any unauthorized entry into or damage to the building. The police will deal with any unlawful behaviour accordingly, and urge the protestors to stay calm and not resort to any illegal actions.
