Insurance for Vehicles Entering Kosovo

UNMIK/PR/478

As of January 2001, all vehicles bearing foreign plates and entering the territory of Kosovo are required to present proof of valid insurance to UNMIK Border Authorities.

Consequently, border insurance is now available at offices of authorized insurance companies located at General Jankovic and Globocica border points. The tariffs applied by the authorised insurance companies range from 5 to 180 DEM for a period of 7 days (30 DEM for a passenger vehicle) and are generally 30% lower than tariffs applied by insurance companies in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

This measure has been taken in view of protecting both foreign and national vehicles driving in Kosovo. Since the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia has been suspended from the International Green Card System, the holders of such documents are currently not covered in Kosovo.

Furthermore, the bilateral insurance agreement between the Macedonian (FYROM) Insurance Bureau and FRY cannot be applied in Kosovo because the insurance systems of Kosovo and of the rest of FRY are incompatible and therefore damages occurring in Kosovo are not covered.

UNMIK hopes, as soon as possible, to conclude a bilateral agreement with FYROM authorities and the Insurance Bureau regarding mutual recognition of insurance policies facilitating free movement of vehicles.
