Four Serb Children Killed by Hit and Run Driver

UNMIK/PR/327

PRISTINA— UNMIK Police are questioning a Kosovo Albanian man whose car hit five Serbian children in Skulanovo village near Lipjan, Sunday afternoon.

Four of the children died; the fifth is seriously injured and is being treated at the Russian KFOR hospital in Kosovo Polje.

“This is a terrible tragedy,” said DSRSG Jock Covey, who visited the injured child in hospital. “We are horrified by this waste of young life. The children are the hope of Kosovo – their death is a blow to every family in Kosovo. Our hearts and our prayers go to the parents of these innocents.”

The regional murder squad is investigating on the scene. An international judge and international prosecutor are expected to be brought onto the case.

UNMIK police say the man, who was apprehended by Swedish KFOR at their Caglavica checkpoint after he fled the scene, is likely to be charged with vehicular homicide as well as driving while intoxicated.
