IAC Discusses Violence

The Interim Administrative Council today discussed the recent violence in Kosovo which occurred in the wake of the Day Against Violence on 9 September.

These included the murder of Rilindija journalist Shefki Popova in Vushtri on Sunday and last night's killing of city planner Rexhep Luci. In addition, an RTK journalist Marjan Melonashi has been missing for the past four days.

They also discussed the recent escape of detainees from the Mitrovica Detention Center. UNMIK will provide a detailed report at the next IAC, along with preliminary measures to make the prison safer.

The acting co-head for the Department of Transport & Infrastructure, Patrick Auffret, described the status of improvements to roads and bridges, aviation, railways and public transport.

Donors have committed 65 million DM for road repairs, while 360 million DM are needed to rebuild the entire road network. Major ongoing projects are concentrating on the main axis roads, while the needs for winter maintenance and municipalities should be met.

Pristina's airport is receiving 10 civilian flights a day. A program has begun to enhance security, and a master plan to expand the airport's capacity is under development.

Regarding Kosovo's railways, the government of Norway is donating 15 locomotives, while negotiations are ongoing with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia on railroad cooperation.
