SRSG reacting to a statement by Serbia's State Secretary Oliver Ivanović

UNMIK/PR/1759

Reacting to a statement by Serbia's State Secretary Oliver Ivanović, with whom he met on 22 February, SRSG Lamberto Zannier clarified his position regarding the issue of an international investigation into the allegations contained in the report by Council of Europe Rapporteur Dick Marty.

The SRSG stressed that the views he expressed at the recent session of the UN Security Council remain unchanged. "I believe that it is in everybody's interest to seek clarity on the issue, and therefore I would welcome an independent international investigation, which UNMIK would support", he explained. He added that, following recent discussions in the UN Security Council, it is for this body’s members to determine the nature of the international mechanism that will carry out the investigation under a Security Council mandate. He limited himself to noting that the EULEX leadership has stated that EULEX has, in their view, the competency and necessary expertise to carry out such an investigation. Other options would have to be further explored and discussed.

He argued that it is in the interest of the UN to facilitate discussions to enable an early start of the investigations.
