UNMIK/PR/1276

Pristina – PRISTINA - Today DSRSG for Pillar 2 Francesco Bastagli and the Minister of Education Rexhep Osmani opened an exhibition of drawings made by primary schoolchildren representing all Kosovo communities. The exhibition is entitled “Kosovo Home to All” and is located in the British Council building and will remain open for 2 more days, until 3 December.

“Sometimes the grown ups are too involved in what happens in Kosovo today and they sometimes forget that our main obligation is to the young people”, said the head of Pillar 2.

“This is important for all of us to know what are the worries, concerns, joys and fears of Kosovo youth and I find these drawings very revealing: there is joy, fun, but there is also concern reflected”, he added.

“Drawings of those children whose life is still challenged and constrained, reflect scenes of barbed wire, tanks and military presence and a degree of oppression is sadly present”.

“And yet, you also see drawings where the communities are joined together in eating, celebrating, in playing and this is an indication of what the young people are telling us of the future they expect”.

“The 13 best pictures will be published in a calendar for 2005 - this calendar will hang on the walls of Kosovo politicians, civil servants, UNMIK employees, KFOR soldiers, diplomats and will remind us every day what Kosovo’s children wish its future to be”. concluded the DSRSG.

33 primary schools from all Kosovo municipalities participated in this competition. The competition was organised by UNMIK and the Kosovo Government to promote the positive values of the Standards for Kosovo, such as respect, tolerance, community and a vision of prosperity. On 3 December PDSRSG Larry Rossin will announce the winners.
