UNMIK/PR/267
Kosovo businesses have only a few days to register with UNMIK before facing fines of up to 500 DM and possible closure.
Registration of businesses has been ongoing since March. However, the deadline for completed applications is fast approaching.
While the final deadline is 30 June, 2000, UNMIK is encouraging businesses to file an application by 20 June, to allow enough time for certification. Fines will be imposed in July against those who fail or delay registration.
All businesses in Kosovo must apply for registration on application forms available in all municipality buildings, and pay a non-refundable administrative fee.
Fees are 100 DM for businesses with fewer than 10 employees and 300 DMs for those with more than 10 employees.
Registration of businesses provides information crucial for making future economic policy. It will also be important for Kosovo's tax base. And a business registration certificate is needed for such things as opening bank accounts and doing business with foreign companies. Only registered businesses can compete in international tenders and apply for financial or technical assistance.
