IAC Welcomes the Serb Decision to Join as Observers

UNMIK/PR/209

The Interim Administrative Council today issued the following statement:

“The Interim Administrative Council welcomes the decision of Serb representatives to join the Joint Interim Administrative Structure as observers.

“The IAC is dedicated to work for a Kosovo which is home to all its communities and this decision by the Serb representatives is essential to building a new Kosovo. We look forward to the Kosovo Serbs joining the Joint Interim Administrative Structure as full members as soon as possible.”

Mr. Jock Covey, PDSRSG, briefed the IAC on his meeting in Gracanica two days ago with Bishop Artemije and Ms. Rada Trajkovic following their decision to join the Joint Interim Administrative Structure as observers.

Next Tuesday will be the first time the IAC will meet with its full membership, including Ms. Rada Trajkovic as observer, and Ms. Feride Rushiti as observer for the Kosovo civil society. Ms. Rushiti is medical director of the Kosovo Rehabilitation Centre for Torture Victims.

The IAC had a long discussion on a number of issues related to the media, including public broadcasting, media monitoring, the regulatory framework on broadcasting and media and coverage of minorities. The Central Election Commission and its composition and other arrangements were also discussed.

The IAC also endorsed three draft regulations. One would allow a transfer or postponement of court proceedings in highly sensitive criminal trials. The second establishes the administrative department of Transport & Infrastructure and the third the department of Labour & Employment. The regulations will next be sent to the United Nations Legal Office in New York before it’s signed by the SRSG, Dr. Bernard Kouchner.

Finally the meeting confirmed the appointment of Mr. Bernardo Cocco as the acting UNMIK co-head for the department of Youth.
