UNMIK/PR/208
PRISTINA-UNMIK has rebuilt 2,767 houses as part of the house rebuilding programme that lasted from August 1999 to March 2000. The programme cost nearly $ 9 million, which was provided by the Governments of Japan and France.
Announcing this, an UNMIK Spokeswoman said today that under the programme houses were rebuilt in three regions, Mitrovica, Peja and Pristina. Regionwise the number of houses rebuilt was: Mitrovica—1680, Peja—728 and Pristina—359. More than 29,100 people benefited from this programme.
Three mechanisms were adopted to implement the programme, namely provision of building materials procured internationally by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), provision of building materials procured through the local vendors and provision of cash directly to the beneficiaries.
Along with the Regional Administrators of the three regions who relied on a number of UNVs, the implementing partners for this programme included the Japanese NGO ADRA and the Cellule d’Urgence of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Governments of Japan and France donated $5.8 million and 20 million FF, respectively, for this programme.
