Pristina-- The Sharr-Salloniti factory at Hani i Elezit is to remain closed, the Department of Trade&Industry announced yesterday. The factory had used asbestos in the manufacture of roof tiles.
Ian Fletcher, co-head of the Department said today “I have today visited the plant to explain our decision to continue the closure of the plant, which ceased production a month ago. We have been concerned to protect the health of workers and the environment in this increasingly congested area near the Macedonian border.
“Our decision has been accepted by the plant’s management. I am delighted that they have agreed to work with the Department in managing the closure process, and in exploring options for the future of the enterprise and its workforce.
“The next steps are clear. We are arranging an environmental survey. At the same time, the assets of the Sharr-Salloniti enterprise, and the skills of the workforce are being quickly evaluated. The Department of Trade&Industry will work with the management of Sharr-Salloniti to provide the best possible future for the enterprise and its workers.”
Sharr-Salloniti is adjacent to the Sharr Cement Works, but it is not included in the lease negotiations currently under way to provide new investment for Sharr Cement.
