Transfer of Mortal Remains from Serbia Proper to Kosovo at Gate Three

UNMIK/PR/1188

PRISTINA - The Office on Missing Persons and Forensics (OMPF), in cooperation with the UNMIK CIVPOL Missing Persons Unit (MPU) and the Serbian authorities, transferred approximately 30 mortal remains identified by DNA from Serbia proper to Kosovo today.

The transfer between the Serbian authorities and the OMPF/MPU team took place at Gate three (Merdare border crossing) at the OMPF transfer facility.

The mortal remains relate to cases exhumed from Batajnica. Once verification procedures were completed, the remains were transported to the Rahovec/Orahovac mortuary where forensic inspections will then begin.

Family members are always the first to be informed about the identification of their loved ones. Teams consisting of an OMPF outreach officer and MPU identification officers will visit the families affected by the transfer when forensic inspections are complete. The mortal remains will then be ready for release to the families.

For Press requiring further information regarding the transfers, please contact OMPF on 038 504 604 5153. Family members should call OMPF Outreach on 038 504 604 6576.

Please note: access to the OMPF transfer facility is restricted unless otherwise directed by OMPF representatives.
