Inauguration of a Stakeholders’ Workshop on Public Administration Strategy

UNMIK/PR/1178

PRISTINA – A Stakeholders’ Workshop on Public Administration Strategy for Kosovo was inaugurated today in Pristina by SRSG Harri Holkeri and Prime Minister Bajram Rexhepi.

The two-day event, organized by the Government with the support of UNMIK Civil Administration, is hosting deliberations among specialists on public administration in Kosovo representing the central and municipal government structures, UNMIK, and the larger stakeholders’ community. Two senior officials from the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) have arrived from New York for the workshop.

The Stakeholders’ Workshop has been organized to facilitate the process of identifying priority areas for developing a short-term and medium-term strategy for public administration in Kosovo. It also aims to provide a forum for the international donor community to interact with the local institutions to identify key areas for developing specific programmes for technical assistance and cooperation.

The Workshop is a follow-up event of several initiatives towards formulating a public administration strategy for Kosovo, which started more than a year ago. These joint initiatives between the Civil Administration Pillar of UNMIK, the UN DESA, and the Government, included a series of meetings and working group reports, which emphasized the need to consolidate all initiatives in this area within a strategic framework. UN DESA prepared a comprehensive analytical report entitled “Public Administration in Kosovo: Situational Analysis and Strategy”. This report will provide the background for the deliberations in the Workshop.

Inaugurating the workshop, SRSG Harri Holkeri stressed the importance of the public administration and government institutions in the achievement of the Standards for Kosovo. Prime Minister Bajram Rexhepi also stressed the need for laying the foundations of a modern public administration system in Kosovo. The inaugural session was also addressed by the Minister of Public Services, Jakup Krasniqi, and the Deputy SRSG for Civil Administration, Francesco Bastagli. Ambassador Pascal Fieschi of OSCE and Mr. Ali Sadriu, Minister for Finance and Economy, also addressed the participants.
