PRISTINA--The situation in the town of Mitrovica was calm overnight.
Principal Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General Jock Covey went to Mitrovica Thursday evening with COMKFOR General Klaus Reinhardt and met with local leader Serb and Albanian leaders, whom he found committed to restoring order.
A curfew was imposed from 20:00 hours to 5 a.m..
There were no significant disturbances overnight, although one United Nations vehicle was set on fire at approximately 21:00.
The dead body of an Albanian male was found on a street in Mitrovica north this morning. UNMIK police are investigating the case.
Another elderly Albanian woman (65 years old) was found in her flat in Mitrovica north this morning. Preliminary investigations indicate she was killed during the Thursday night events.
As of today, we can report that at least seven people died as a result of the 3 February disturbances. Five appeared to have died Thursday night and two died on Friday in hospital as a result of injuries sustained during Thursday night.
The dead include five Albanians and two Turks, all civilians.
UNMIK Police, who are responsible for investigations in Mitrovica, continue to investigate the events of 3 February. KFOR has re-inforced its units in Multinational Brigade North with units from Multinational Brigade West.
Dr. Bernard Kouchner, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, will visit Mitrovica tomorrow, upon his return from Japan.
In other parts of Kosovo, UNMIK Police report today that a hand grenade was thrown into a car with Albanian passengers yesterday evening at 2145 hours at a location five kms southeast of Lipljan. One person was killed and two others injured. UNMIK Police and KFOR are investigating.
In Gnjilane, at 20:00 yesterday, a Serb male was shot dead by unknown persons at the door of his apartment. UNMIK Police are investigating
