UNMIK/PR/1146
PRISTINA – Tomorrow marks five years since NATO intervened to stop the killing in Kosovo. We understand the feelings of many that this event should be marked by public commemorations. We agree that all the people of Kosovo should be able to express themselves freely and openly.
In keeping with this, we appeal for calm and peaceful gatherings.
UNMIK and KFOR are partners of the people of Kosovo. We are here to ensure individual human rights for everyone and the right to gather peacefully. Yet neither UNMIK Police, including the Kosovo Police Service, nor KFOR can accept actions which incite violence.
With the right to demonstrate comes the responsibility to obey the law. We strongly advise all those who plan to attend public gatherings tomorrow to show restraint and avoid falling prey to those who do not have the interests of Kosovo in mind.
We ask for your co-operation as we work to provide the necessary security for these public events.
