PRISTINA - The last 48 hours have been terrible and shocking for the people of Kosovo. We have the fullest sympathy with the families of those who have died or the injured.
But the violence must stop and it must stop immediately. There is no excuse for any attacks on others or acts of retribution. There is never a reason to attack or intimidate our neighbours. Such actions are intolerable. They are a disgrace to us all.
To those on the streets or on the roadblocks, or those taking part in demonstrations, we say “Go home now”. The police and KFOR will take care of security and they must be allowed to do their work. The events of today and the last days will be investigated, and those responsible for deaths and acts of violence will be prosecuted.
We have come a long way to build a society for all communities and ethnic groups in Kosovo. We cannot allow that work and good will to be destroyed in a few hours. It is time for everyone to take responsibility for themselves and work for a peaceful society for all of us.
The press must act responsibly and not add to the tension with unfounded statements and incendiary reporting.
It is in the best interests of all people of Kosovo now for there to be calm and for people to return to their families and their homes.
