UNMIK/PR/148
PRISTINA – The temporary registration of all motor vehicles in Kosovo will re-start on Tuesday, 1 February 2000. The vehicle registration office is located at the former Yugopetrol storage site and is open from Monday to Friday from 0830 to 1600.
Vehicle holders should come to the vehicle registration site in accordance with the following order: last names beginning with A - F on Mondays, G - K on Tuesdays, L - P on Wednesdays, Q - U on Thursdays, V - Z and international organizations on Fridays.
An agreement was reached with the UNMIK Customs Services that vehicle holders need to provide proof of payment of customs fees for their vehicles. Vehicle holders who do not have documentation on this payment need to go to the UNMIK Customs Services at the UNMIK Customs House to document the value of their vehicle. In case they do not possess any documentation on the value of the vehicle, the customs service will make an evaluation. Vehicle holders will then pay a 15 % customs fee and a 10 % sales tax on their vehicle.
Vehicle holders who have already registered their vehicle also need to provide documentation on the payment of customs fees.
Still, no insurance company has met the financial requirements in order to be registered by UNMIK. Insurance companies need to have proof of sufficient capital and be able to fulfill their obligations to policyholders in the case of a claim. The first insurance companies are expected to be approved by UNMIK sometime in the month of February.
To date, more than 3,000 vehicles have been registered. The holders of these vehicles have already obtained their new vehicle license plates and receive the registration documents once the proof of insurance coverage has been provided.
