UNMIK/PR/133
PRISTINA – The Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Bernard Kouchner, today received a donation of 12 snowplows from the European Union, which were presented by the Director of the EU Task Force in Kosovo, Mr. Mark Franco.
These snowplows will be used, as the eight earlier donated snowplows, to clear the main roads within and leading into Kosovo, to clear the city of Pristina and the runways at Pristina's Slatina airport. Mr. Kouchner thanked the European Union for this donation in the name of the people of Kosovo. He said that this would help to alleviate the dangerous conditions in the streets of Pristina and elsewhere.
Also, today, under the auspices of UNMIK, the Pristina municipal company Hygiena Teknika started removing the ice from the streets in Pristina. Several hundred workers have been employed to actually hack the ice off the streets. Additional workers are going to be hired to increase the workforce.
Hygiena Teknika is also prepared to spread abrasive material in the streets of Pristina. KFOR is providing salt and sand and will also train drivers to handle the specialized vehicles for this task.
