SRSG Visits Kosovo A and B Power Plants

UNMIK/PR/122

Pristina – Bernard Kouchner, Special Representative of the Secretary-General, today visited the Kosovo A and B Power Plants with members of the Interim Administrative Council (IAC).

Dr. Kouchner, together with Hashim Thaci, Ibrahim Rugova and Rexhep Qosja, visited the two power plants to see how the restoration of the electricity system was progressing.

“We have come together, the members of the IAC, to show you that we will work together,” Dr. Kouchner told journalists and power plant workers during the visit. “This is an impossible task. These workers are making miracles and are speeding up the process to provide power to the people of Kosovo.”

Dr. Kouchner and the other members of the IAC toured the two plants, both of which were generating electricity. Production rose from 120 megawatts to 500 megawatts this week.

Fatos Aliu, director of the Kosovo Electric Company (KEK) told the council members that his workers have been busily trying to get the plants up and running during the emergency first phase of the restoration.

“This is a very slow process,” Dr. Kouchner said. “Kosovo A has not been maintained by anybody for 10 to 15 years. Only one unit of Kosovo B is working. We have to restart the other one and working together we will do it.”
