First Meeting of Economic Policy Advisory Board

UNMIK/PR/42

Pristina – The Kosovo Economic Policy Advisory Board held its first meeting yesterday afternoon, chaired by Ajri Begu and Scott Brown. During the course of the discussion it established initial working groups in three areas: fiscal policy, the financial sector, and enterprises and property. The membership of these working groups is provided below.

The working groups will be convened in coming week to begin reviewing proposals—developed with the help of experts from international organizations, including the IMF and World Bank—for the Kosovo budget, the establishment of related fiscal institutions, the establishment of a bank licensing and supervisory agency, the reorganization of the banking and payments systems, and issues relating the future ownership and operations of enterprises in Kosovo.

The Board, established on Monday by Mr. Kouchner, consists of local experts, representing the political spectrum of Kosovo, and experts appointed by UNMIK. It is intended to be the final filter where proposals on regulations on economic issues of systemic importance are examined, before being signed by the Special Representative. The Board’s suggestions are not be binding on the Special Representative, but they have a strong moral and professional weight.
