SRSG statement following the SG’s announcement on Kosovo

UNMIK/PR/1428

PRISTINA – SRSG Søren Jessen-Petersen this evening issued the following statement after the announcement by Secretary-General Kofi Annan that, after studying Ambassador Kai Eide’s comprehensive review of Standards in Kosovo, he recommended to the UN Security Council that status talks should begin:

“Today, the Secretary-General recommended to the Security Council that talks on Kosovo’s status should begin. I was of course consulted by the Secretary-General, and I welcome his recommendation.

The road ahead is clear. I expect the PISG to work hard to ensure that Kosovo makes further and faster progress in implementing Standards, particularly in the areas where significant challenges still remain. The Kosovo that moves towards the decision on status should be a truly multi-ethnic society.

We in UNMIK remain ready to support fully the PISG and all the people of Kosovo in every way we can.”
