UNMIK/PR/1422
PRISTINA - Principal Deputy SRSG Larry Rossin today addressed the inaugural session of the Municipal Assembly of the Pilot Municipal Unit (PMU) of Junik. He termed the swearing-in of the second pilot Municipal Assembly, following the PMU of Hani i Elezit/General Jankovic inaugurated last Thursday, as “another important step in the reform of local government in Kosovo, which is basically about how to bring power closer to the people in their daily lives.”
As Junik, that used to be a municipality before, embarks “on the road to controlling its own affairs again”, the PDSRSG told the residents and newly sworn-in members: “Democracy is your responsibility and your opportunity. The PMUs are one part of the long-term process to build local government reform all through Kosovo. And your opportunity is to empower yourselves to manage your own daily lives, to build the very future of your children, and to do that for all residents of the community regardless of their ethnicity, religion or any other factor.”
“Now that the Municipal Assembly has been established, it is time for you to start re-establishing those municipal structures which can help you manage your own lives,” the PDSRSG said, promising full support of UNMIK to “make this reform a success”.
Prime Minister Bajram Kosumi, Local Government Administration Minister Lutfi Haziri and President of the Municipality of Decan/Decani Nazmi Selmani also addressed the ceremony. The oldest Assembly member present, Mr. Ukshin Sallaj, administered the oath of office to his fellow councillors.
