UNMIK/PR/1421
Pristina - Principal Deputy SRSG Larry Rossin this morning joined Prime Minister Bajram Kosumi and Local Government Administration Minister Lutfi Haziri at the inaugural session of the Municipal Assembly of the Pilot Municipal Unit (PMU) of Hani i Elezit/General Jankovic. He congratulated the newly sworn-in Assembly members and residents of the PMU on this “great day” that marks “another phase in the construction of Kosovo as a truly European society, consistent with its aspirations”.
Minister Haziri opened the session and handed over to the oldest Assembly member who then administered the oath of office to his fellow councillors. Both the Minister and the Prime Minister spoke about the importance of the PMU to the larger, longer-term process of decentralisation in Kosovo.
The PDSRSG reminded the Assembly and residents that the local government reform process includes the transfer of competences, drafting of new legislation, local financing and capacity-building. This process is about “enhancing the effectiveness of public services by bringing them closer to the citizens involved, and improving local administrative capacities”, said the PDSRSG, adding that it must serve the needs of all communities.
The PDSRSG pledged UNMIK’s full support, in partnership with the government, to help the PMU face the challenge of making the reform a success.
