PRISTINA – At the request of Peja/Peć municipality, UNMIK facilitated an agreement Thursday on the way forward in addressing concerns raised about the building of a wall around the Peć Patriarchate.
At a meeting chaired by the Head of the Department of Civil Administration, Patricia Waring together with the UNMIK Legal Adviser Alexander Borg-Olivier, Peja/Peć Municipal Assembly President Ali Lajçi and Municipal CEO Shkëlzen Hyseni discussed their concerns with Serbian Orthodox Bishop Theodosije and Father Sava Janjić.
The discussions resulted in an agreement to break a months-long impasse on technical issues connected to the construction of the wall, and the first steps in implementing that agreement were taken immediately following the meeting. The agreement was reached in a spirit of goodwill and sincere dialogue, which all sides hope will reduce tensions recently created over the building of the wall. UNMIK will continue to facilitate communication between both parties.
Additionally, the Municipality and Church representatives agreed to begin consultations to resolve local concerns about access to public resources in the area near the Patriarchate.
