UNMIK/PR/328

PRISTINA— UNMIK Police are questioning a Kosovo Albanian man whose car hit a group of Serbian children in Skulanovo village near Lipjan, Sunday afternoon.

Despite early reports which said that four of the children had died, only one of the group of youngsters was killed. Three others have been treated at the Russian KFOR hospital in Kosovo Polje.

“This is a terrible tragedy,” said DSRSG Jock Covey, who visted the injured children in the hospital. “Children are the hope for the future of Kosovo. Our prayers are with all the families. And we wish the injured kids a speedy recovery.”

The regional homicide squad is investigating the incident. An international judge and international prosecutor will be brought onto the case.

The driver of the vehicle which hit the children fled the scene. UNMIK police are now questioning a man who was apprehended at the Swedish KFOR Caglavica checkpoint. He is likely to be charged with vehicular homicide as well as driving while intoxicated.
