UNMIK/PR/1235

PRISTINA - SRSG Søren Jessen-Petersen and the Ambassador of Japan to Serbia and Montenegro, H.E. Ryuichi Tanabe exchanged notes today on a training programme for Kosovars in Japan. Prime Minister Bajram Rexhepi and the Minister for Environment and Spatial Planning, Ethem Çeku also attended the ceremony.

Around ten Kosovar trainees are expected to participate in the programme under the umbrella of the “Japan International Cooperation Agency” (JICA) this and next year. The courses mostly focus on the economic sphere.

SRSG Jessen-Petersen underlined the importance and generosity of Japan’s contribution to the economic and social development of Kosovo. “Though Japan may look geographically far away, it is very close when it comes to the support of this region.”

Ambassador Tanabe talked about the continuing Japanese support for Kosovo: “In the future Japan intends to strengthen its contribution through human resource development.”

Japan is one of the most important donors in Kosovo with 181 million Euros in the past five years.
