IAC Endorse Day Against Violence

UNMIK/PR/332

The Interim Administrative Council today agreed to support events around Kosovo which are being planned as part of the "Day Against Violence," proposed by local leaders as a follow up to the Airlie House meeting last month in Washington.

The IAC also agreed to visit to Peja/Pec on Monday in the context of the Roma Platform for Action, along with SRSG Bernard Kouchner, COMKFOR Gen. Ortuno, UNHCR Special Envoy Eric Morris and Koha Ditore publisher Veton Surroi.

Dr. Kouchner described his most recent town hall visit, to Ferizaj/Urosevac on Wednesday with EU leader Javier Solana. Dr. Kouchner visits Istok on Saturday and Obilic and Prizren/Dragash next week, as part of his outreach campaign to inform the people of Kosovo about UNMIK and the Joint Interim Administrative Structure and to engage them in a dialogue about Kosovo's progress.

DSRSG Alan Pearson briefed the group extensively on fiscal outlook for the year 2001: next year's Budget must be presented to the IAC for approval by 5 December. He also stressed the need to proceed toward a speedy endorsement of the regulation establishing the administrative Department of Trade and Industry, which the IAC will discuss again on Tuesday.

DSRSG Tom Koenigs described draft regulations under preparation for discussion in the IAC which address the issue of assistance to war invalids, including civilians, their families and the families of those who died as a result of the war.

Also discussed was the issue of FRY elections, in light of the SPS rally held recently in Gracanica.
