Implementation of new Kosovo postcodes

UNMIK/PR/1368

New postcodes for Kosovo authorized by UNMIK became effective 1st of June 2005. PTK is responsible for the implementation of the new postcodes.

The new postcodes were developed in cooperation with the Universal Postal Union (UPU). UNMIK approved the new postcodes for Kosovo as the interim administrative authority under UN Security Council resolution 1244 (1999). At the request of the UPU, UNMIK confirmed that it had the formal powers to approve the new postcodes for Kosovo pursuant to its authority under UNSCR 1244 (1999) and that it had in fact approved such postcodes. On the basis of this confirmation provided by UNMIK, the UPU has published a circular notifying postal administrations of the new postcodes which have been added to the Universal POST*CODES® DataBase.

As a result of the new codes, postal services should now be faster, more secure and cheaper. Mail will now be sorted directly in Kosovo instead of in transitional centers in countries such as Albania or Switzerland.

A very significant aspect of the new codes is that they will allow for a more accurate and timely calculation of payments –the so-called terminal dues- that postal operators are obliged to make to the receiving postal administration for the final delivery to addressees. As there is much more incoming mail to Kosovo than there is outgoing, the balance of these payments will be a surplus for Kosovo.

The new code for Prishtine/Pristina is 10 000, Prizren 20 000, Peja/Pec 30 000, Mitrovice/Mitrovica 40 000, Gjakovë/Đakovica 50 000, Gjilan/Gnjilane 60 000, and Ferizaj/Uroševac 70 000. Prishtine/Pristina Region has 31 postal sub-codes; Prizren Region 23, Peja/Pec Region 9, Mitrovica and Gjilan/Gnjilane each have 11, the region of Gjakovë/Đakovica 10 and the region of Ferizaj/Uroševac has 8 postal sub-codes.
