Interim Administrative Council Reviews Election Regulations

UNMIK/PR/160

PRISTINA--At its regular meeting today, the Interim Administrative Council discussed pending regulations which are crucial to paving the way to elections in Kosovo later this year.

Regulations on the Registration of Political Parties, the Central Civil Registration and the Central Election Commission will stipulate conditions for the organization of political parties, population registration and compilation of a voters' list. The issue of elections will be discussed tomorrow by the Kosovo Transitional Council, the major Kosovo advisory body to UNMIK and the JIAS, at its regular meeting.

The IAC also discussed final arrangements for the establishment of the administrative departments of Health & Social Welfare, Education & Science, Local Administration and the Central Fiscal Authority (Budget & Finance).

The four departments, the first under the Joint Interim Administrative Structure to become operational, will be officially established once regulations defining their exact functions are signed. The IAC continued discussion on technical details still to be agreed to by the departments' co-heads.

It was also announced at today's meeting that Behxhet Brajshori (of the LDK party) has been designated as co-head of the Department of Public Services. The UNMIK co-head will be Peter Schumann, deputy director of Administrative and Support Services for UNMIK's Civil Administration.
