Kouchner Welcomes Haekkerup to Kosovo

UNMIK/PR/462

SRSG Bernard Kouchner today welcomed SRSG-designate Hans Haekkerup to Kosovo, where the Danish Defense Minister arrived for a two-day series of briefings from top UNMIK and KFOR officials on the job that awaits him beginning 15 January.

The visit was delayed due to fog which engulfed Pristina’s airport. However, most meetings went ahead as scheduled, and the incoming chief executive of UNMIK was briefed on some of the key issues facing Kosovo and on the work of UNMIK.

Following a working lunch with Dr. Kouchner, Mr. Haekkerup met with DSRSG Tom Koenigs and senior staff from UNMIK’s Civil Administration who described developments in local administration and municipal government.

The Kosovo Budget and developments in trade and industry, particularly the Trepca complex, were topics covered by DSRSG Andy Bearpark, head of Reconstruction and Development.

Later Haekkerup concentrated on the issues of missing and detained persons and minorities in a meeting with UNMIK’s Office of Human Rights and Minority Affairs.

This afternoon he meets with the top KFOR command to learn about civil-military coordination, the situation in the Presevo Valley and the Kosovo Protection Corps.

Tonight at a working dinner with police and judicial officials, the topic is to be the “Rule of Law” in Kosovo.

Haekkerup is also acquainting himself with key departments within his own office, including the UNMIK Chief of Staff and Office of the Spokeswoman/Division of Public Information.
