PRISTINA – The UNMIK Office on Missing Persons and Forensics has asked local radio stations around Kosovo to broadcast a public service announcement beginning today with information on the distribution of several hundred Medical Death Certificates.
The Death Certificates to be issued, during August and September, will be for victims who were exhumed and identified by teams of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in 1999.
This is the first phase of the issuance of medical death certificates from bodies exhumed and autopsied in 1999. The certificates will be issued by the Department of Justice through the UNMIK Office on Missing Persons and Forensics.
Families with deceased members who were identified during 1999 but who have not yet received Medical Death Certificates, should go to their municipality to check the lists of the deceased for whom death certificates will be issued during this phase of the exercise.
The list of names for whom Death Certificates are available will be at each municipality beginning today. Also at each municipality will be a schedule for the issuing of death certificates around Kosovo.
Other questions should be addressed to the family association for the missing in their area.
A report in Tanjug two days ago on this procedure was incorrect: Death certificates will be available only for those victims exhumed and identified during the ICTY work in 1999.
It is believed that all death certificates to be distributed during this phase are for Kosovo Albanians.
