PRISTINA – A multi-ethnic passenger train began running this week in a move towards establishing normal transport for all residents of Kosovo.
The train runs twice a day between Kosovo Polje and Zvecan with stops at Obolic, Priluzje, Vucitrn and Mitrovica. Security on the trains and at the stations is being provided by the UN Interim Administration (UNMIK) police and KFOR, the international peacekeeping force.
About 200 people used the train on Monday, the first day of operation, but this figure increased significantly during the week.
Locomotives from Germany and France are being used for the service. Programmes to revitalize the railway system in Kosovo are currently being worked out. Germany, Sweden and the EU have dedicated funds to the overall repair of the railway network including the signal system and railway workshops.
