PRISTINA – PDSRSG Charles Brayshaw today visited Gnjilan to meet injured persons and to see for himself the damage to the town caused by yesterday’s earthquake.
SRSG Michael Steiner, currently in New York, requested Mr. Brayshaw to visit Gnjilan and assess the situation on his behalf. SRSG Michael Steiner was concerned about the safety and welfare of the people in the affected areas and asked for a report on the situation.
Mr. Brayshaw walked through the centre of town, which sustained the most damage in the earthquake, the park where tents have been set up to shelter those whose houses were damaged and the hospital, where he met doctors, nurses and the injured persons. He congratulated the hospital staff for the “wonderful work” that they had done after the injured people started arriving at the hospital.
Kosovo Protection Corps (KPC) members briefed Mr. Brayshaw about the work they had done following the earthquake. He also congratulated them and especially the KPC commander, Gen. Agim Ceku, for their fine contribution and capable handling of the emergency situation after the earthquake struck.
Mr. Brayshaw told the people “UNMIK would provide all the assistance it could in dealing with the effects of the disaster”.
