PDSRSG praises Prizren municipal institutions

UNMIK/PR/1322

PRISTINA - Principal Deputy SRSG Larry Rossin today praised the functioning of the municipal institutions during his two-day visit to Prizren.

Addressing the Municipal Assembly, the PDSRSG said it was particularly encouraging that salaries and fixed costs accounted for an unusually low percentage of the municipal budget. “This allows more money for projects and development activities”, said the PDSRSG, adding that he was also pleased to hear that Assembly Committees and the Local Crime Prevention Council met regularly.

The PDSRSG congratulated the Municipality for the work already accomplished with regard to minorities and reiterated that “in the implementation of Standards, much of the work has to be done at the municipal level”. He praised the municipal language interpretation facilities but urged the authorities to make additional efforts to implement the language policy fully and quickly, calling on them to put up all street and municipal buildings signs in all local languages.

The PDSRSG also visited the Centre of Employment, one of the largest regional vocational centres in Kosovo and managed mostly by local employees. Since its opening in 2002, the Centre has provided training to more than 720 trainees in fields ranging from catering to business management.

The PDSRSG will go to Smac/q tomorrow, on the second day of his visit.
