PRISTINA – Principal Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Kosovo (PDSRSG) Steven Schook today visited Zvečan/Zvecan and Mitrovicë/a municipalities. The meeting focused on security matters, and the PDSRSG was accompanied by Director of the Department of Justice Albert Moskowitz and Police Commissioner Kai Vittrup.
Mr. Schook said the meeting was very productive as there was agreement as to what is needed to address some of the security concerns currently felt in northern Kosovo. The Municipal Presidents told the PDSRSG that they consider it very important to have a police force they have trust in, and how they would want to select their own policemen and [police] captains. “While we were talking, we found that that there is a programme that would address this very issue, and we need the support of the Municipal Presidents to identify former Kosovo Serbian policemen who could undergo a short course and join the police force”, said the PDSRSG, adding that, now that there is an understanding of how this programme could be taken forward, “I’m hopeful that if we get the right people to sign up, we can come to a very quick solution that addresses some of the security concerns up here now”.
The PDSRSG also met Serbian National Council representatives Milan Ivanovic and Marko Jaksic, as well as the Co-ordination Centre for Kosovo’s regional Co-ordinator, Momir Kasalovic. Earlier, he had a meeting with representatives of internally displaced Roma, Ashkali and Egyptians in northern Mitrovica.
