Pristina - The Office on Missing Persons and Forensics (OMPF) has completed plans for establishing the new Medical Examiners’ Office (MEO) of Kosovo.
The creation of the MEO forms part of the reorganization of Kosovo’s medico-legal system, a project that has been transferred from the Department of Health to the Department of Justice.
The Medical Examiners’ Office will be a state-of-the-art facility featuring:
- An autopsy suite
- Histology and toxicology laboratories
- A 24-hour rape crisis centre
- Medical teaching resources
- Centralized offices for doctors and residents
The site designated for the new facility in Fushe Kosova/Kosovo Polje will also house a fully equipped Crime Laboratory and facilities for the Kosovo Police Service.
The tendering process for construction of the facility is expected to begin shortly, and the Office on Missing Persons and Forensics plans to break ground well before the end of the year.
The first sufficiency examination for local doctors who will be employed at the new facility will take place on Thursday, 26 September 2002.
An international board of expert forensic doctors has been convened to oversee the hiring process.
