UNMIK/PR/706
Pristina--- On 25 March, UNMIK, in co-operation with UNHCR, through the Municipal Civil Registration Centres in the five regions (Gjilan/ Gnjilane, Mitrovica, Peja/ Pec, Prishtina/ Pristina and Prizren) will start the registration and re-registration of persons from fYROM with temporary protection in Kosovo.
A significant number of these persons arrived in Kosovo during the early part of 2001 and were hosted by the people of Kosovo. UNMIK in close co-operation with UNHCR registered the majority of the new arrivals and facilitated the provision of public services and other humanitarian assistance.
Towards the end of 2001, with the improvement of the situation in fYROM, a large number of these persons elected to return to their homes.
In order to continue planning and providing public services to those still remaining in Kosovo, UNMIK and UNHCR need to obtain accurate information on all persons who fled the conflict in fYROM and are still residing in Kosovo, including those who have as yet not been registered.
At the conclusion of the exercise all persons who have registered and re-registered will be issued registration cards through the Municipal Civil Registration Centre where they would have registered. The cards will identify each individual as a “Person with Temporary Protection in Kosovo”. The registration card will be valid for a period of one year with a possibility for renewal.
It is important to note that failure to re-register now or at any other time will result in the de-registration of the individuals concerned. Furthermore, some public services and assistance will be dependent on the possession of the registration card.
It is essential for each individual concerned to come in person to the participating Municipal Civil Registration Centre nearest to their place of current residence and register or re-register. Members of a family should all come together to the Municipal Civil Registration Centre at the same time and should bring all personal documents that they posses with them. Arrangements will be made to register vulnerable housebound cases.
