PRISTINA –In a briefing today for the European Union (EU) Political and Security Committee in Brussels, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Kosovo (SRSG) Joachim Rücker said that further progress on implementation of Security Council resolution 1244 and the Standards depended on the timely resolution of final status.
Reporting on the visit of the Security Council to Kosovo last week, Mr. Rücker stressed that the UN ambassadors consider continued EU unity on the Kosovo issue as crucial.
Mr. Rücker said that UNMIK remains confident about the transition. He said the mission was working in partnership with the local authorities and the planning teams of the International Civilian Office and the European Union to prepare for the 120-day transition that will immediately follow the adoption of a new resolution on Kosovo. “The work has proceeded successfully,” he said. “We are now poised to begin handing over our responsibilities once the Security Council passes a resolution.”
Mr. Rücker met earlier in the day with the EU Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn. The SRSG also held meetings with Member of the European Parliament, Mr. Bart Staes (Belgium), NATO Secretary General Japp de Hoop Schaeffer, and Dutch diplomat Pieter Feith.
The Political and Security Committee is the institutional core of the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and plays a central part in preparation and follow-up relating to the work of the CFSP. It is comprised of ambassadors of the EU member states.
