UNMIK/PR/1431
PRISTINA – SRSG Søren Jessen-Petersen today chaired the first meeting of the newly constituted ISSR Steering Committee (ISC), as part of the Internal Security Sector Review (ISSR) process.
Welcoming the members of the Steering Committee, the SRSG said, “Your position will provide you with a significant opportunity to direct and monitor the process which will lead to the establishment of an efficient, affordable and accountable internal security sector for all people of Kosovo.”
The Steering Committee has been established at the head of the structures being developed to conduct the ISSR process that was initiated earlier this year for conducting an Internal Security Sector Review in Kosovo. Chaired by the SRSG, the Steering Committee is composed of sixteen members: five from the international community, including COMKFOR and Heads of UNMIK Pillars I, III/OSCE and IV/EU; and 11 Kosovan representatives, from Kosovo’s Government, Opposition and ethnic communities.
“Wide participation by all communities in the ISSR process is vital for Kosovo’s future internal security architecture,” the SRSG said, adding: “We note the absence of several political parties and minority community representatives. In the case of the Kosovo Serb community, we recognise their difficulties, commend this process to them and look forward to their future participation in this crucial process.”
