PRISTINA - Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) Søren Jessen-Petersen this morning chaired the third meeting of the Internal Security Sector Review (ISSR) Steering Committee. Among those participating were the President and Prime Minister of Kosovo.
The SRSG expressed his full support for the ISSR process that is directed at the establishment of an efficient, affordable and accountable internal security sector in Kosovo. “The ISSR is the most important process to determine Kosovo’s future internal security structures,” the SRSG said.
He underlined the importance of participation of all communities in the ISSR process. He said: “ISSR is not a bureaucratic exercise. It is important to each and every citizen of Kosovo. It is about personal security of all Kosovo inhabitants and it gives the citizens a chance to influence the design of Kosovo’s future security architecture.”
The ISSR process will outline a vision for Kosovo, including strategic security goals such as economic growth, rule of law and education and is designed for all people in Kosovo. The SRSG noted that so far over a thousand citizens have already been involved in the process and the joint outreach programme conducted in partnership with OSCE will include many more.
The Steering Committee is the premier body responsible for directing and monitoring the ISSR process at the highest level. Chaired by the SRSG, the Steering Committee is composed of 17 members: six from the international community, including COMKFOR and Heads of UNMIK’s Police and Justice, OSCE and EU Pillars; and 11 Kosovo representatives, from the Government, the Opposition and ethnic communities.
