PRISTINA - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Mr. Harri Holkeri, expressed grave concern on learning of the shooting incident this afternoon at the Mitrovica Detention Centre. The incident occurred between international officers from the Police and Correctional Units.
As a result of the shooting three international officers died, including two from the United States and one from Jordan. Eleven other international officers received gunshot wounds. They are currently receiving medical treatment. Under the direction of Police Commissioner Stefan Feller, an investigation of the circumstances of the incident has begun.
On receiving information about the incident Mr. Holkeri said, “I am deeply shocked and dismayed at the unfortunate death of dedicated professionals who have come such a great distance to help Kosovo on its road to the future. I convey my heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, to their UNMIK Police contingents, and their home countries’ government. I wish speedy recovery to the injured officers.”
Police Commissioner Feller who immediately visited the scene of the incident said: “I am saddened at this tragic incident. My personal thoughts are with the families of the officers who died or are injured from the shooting. There will be a thorough investigation into the incident.”
