SRSG Hans Haekkerup met with top officials of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia in Skopje yesterday to offer his concern and support to FYROM’s attempts to reduce tensions across the border from Kosovo.
FYROM President Boris Trajkovski invited the SRSG and COMKFOR General Cabigiosu to Skopje late yesterday.
Besides the President, Mr. Haekkerup also met with Foreign Minister Srdjan Kerim and Prime Minister Ljubcho Georgievski.
Mr. Haekkerup said that he and UNMIK would do all possible to help stablilize the situation and encouraged the FYROM officials to seek a political solution to the tensions which yesterday claimed the lives of three FYROM security officers. He also supported the agreement between FYROM and KFOR to keep meeting and increase communications.
The SRSG expressed concern over the closing of the border crossing points between FYROM and Kosovo and was assured that the FYROM would re-open the crossings soon.
