UNMIK/PR/1374

PRISTINA – SRSG Søren Jessen-Petersen held a meeting today in Belgrade with Vojislav Kostunica, Prime Minister of Serbia and Dr. Nebojsa Covic, President of Kosovo Coordination Centre, as well as with representatives of President Tadic and officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Serbia and Montenegro.

The SRSG expressed his satisfaction with the decision to launch the comprehensive review, underscoring that although there is progress in Standards implementation, much remains to be done and the result of the review is not a forgone conclusion.

The SRSG welcomed the continued openness and progress on dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade. He was pleased to note that the working groups on the Missing Persons and Returns of the displaced, held this week in Pristina, had been constructive and encouraging, and he looked forward to next week’s working group on Energy. He noted that the working group on transportation and telecommunications should begin in the near future, and that discussions will be held with a view to launching working talks on the environment. “There is a lot to build on at this stage and we must continue to focus on results,” he said.

He urged that dialogues between Pristina and Belgrade political leaders be held soon, and underlined that UNMIK remains ready to facilitate this.

He welcomed the participation of the Kosovo Serbs in the working groups on decentralization and parliamentary committees, and once again urged Belgrade leaders to send a clear signal supporting full participation of Kosovo Serbs in the institutions in Kosovo.

The SRSG also briefed the Contact Group representatives in Belgrade on the current situation in Kosovo.
