UNMIK/PR/1724

PRISTINA – Following his meeting today with the European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Kosovo (SRSG) Joachim Ruecker said that “the United Nations and the European Union have an excellent working relationship in Kosovo. I am certain that this will remain the case in the future.”

Also attending the meeting were COMKFOR Lt.-Gen. Xavier de Marnhac and senior EU officials.

“As the Secretary-General said, recent developments are likely to have operational implications for UNMIK. I expect that New York will provide detailed instructions soon on how UNMIK should interact with EULEX,” the SRSG said.

“Pending further guidance from New York, UNMIK will continue to consider resolution 1244 as the legal framework for its mandate,” Mr. Ruecker said.

They also discussed the situation in northern Mitrovica. In light of today’s attacks on two boundary crossings, the SRSG and COMKFOR briefed the High Representative on the actions taken by UNMIK and KFOR.
