PRISTINA – SRSG Michael Steiner today opened two new blocks in Dubrava prison near Peje/Pec. The refurbishment of these blocks was financed by the German government with approximately 1.1 million Euros. SRSG Michael Steiner also welcomed 23 German correctional officers who will start working in the Special Security Unit of the prison this week.
SRSG Michael Steiner thanked the German government for its engagement with Kosovo. “I am grateful to the German government for its support, but I am even more grateful for the 23 correctional officers who have come here”, said SRSG Michael Steiner. “You will support us in our fight against crime”, he added.
Turning to the people gathered, SRSG Michael Steiner said, “There is zero tolerance against crime. You will see the results soon, despite all the difficulties and the wall of silence that exists”. He pointed out that the treatment of prisoners had to be in line with the standards that UNMIK wanted to reach for all Kosovo, i.e., European standards. He said that prison management was an example of how to engage in the efforts towards Europe.
SRSG Michael Steiner then visited the new blocks and the prison hospital.
