SRSG Michael Steiner Signs OPIC Agreement

UNMIK/PR/745

PRISTINA – SRSG Michael Steiner today countersigned an agreement with the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), a U.S. Government agency. The agreement provides political risk insurance to facilitate private sector investment by U.S. citizens and comes into effect immediately.

“The existence of this OPIC Agreement should make it much more attractive for the American private sector to invest in Kosovo”, stated SRSG Michael Steiner. “I would like to see this example followed by other nations,” he added.

OPIC also supports loans by several private investment funds that make
equity investments in projects located in places covered by the OPIC
Agreement. Such funds include a worldwide water fund, a worldwide
environmental fund and the Southeast Europe Fund. All these would be
looking for projects in Kosovo to invest in.

SRSG Michael Steiner signed the agreement in the presence of Prime Minister Bajram Rexhepi, Ambassador John Menzies, Chief of Mission, U.S. Office, Ambassador William B. Taylor, Coordinator of U.S. Assistance to Europe and Eurasia, U.S. State Department, Minister of Finance and Economy Ali Sadriu, Minister of Trade and Industry Ali Jakupi, PDSRSG Charles Brayshaw and D/DSRSG Pillar IV Juergen Voss.
