PRISTINA – Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Kosovo (SRSG) Joachim Rücker praised Slovakia’s constructive role in the region, following meetings today in Bratislava together with Kosovo Prime Minister Agim Çeku.

“I was impressed with Slovakia’s deep understanding of Kosovo and regional issues and very happy with their constructive role,” the SRSG said, noting Slovakia’s membership in the EU, NATO, and the UN Security Council.

SRSG Rücker and Prime Minister Çeku visited Slovakia at the invitation of the Slovak Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ján Kubiš.

The SRSG and Prime Minister exchanged views on the ongoing status process with Minister Kubiš, MFA Political Director Miroslav Lajčák, and senior officials of the foreign and defence ministries.

“Timely resolution of status is needed to enhance regional stability and promote European integration of the Western Balkans,” the SRSG said.

Mr. Rücker and Mr. Çeku briefed their interlocutors on the progress that has been achieved in Kosovo to date, noting the need to continue Standards implementation including a focus on minority issues, as well as the need to prepare for the transition that will occur following a decision on Kosovo’s status. The SRSG stressed the necessity for unity during the status process and the need for Kosovo Serbs to participate fully in political and institutional life in Kosovo.

On Sunday evening, the SRSG and Prime Minister participated in a roundtable discussion on Kosovo with representatives of Slovak civil society organizations.
