PRISTINA – The Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) Søren Jessen-Petersen during this week signed Regulations promulgating ten Laws adopted by the Assembly of Kosovo. In a meeting last week with the President of the Assembly Kole Berisha, the SRSG discussed the status of pending legislation.
“With these Laws Kosovo can continue moving forward towards harmonizing its legal system in accordance with European standards. These are all important legislative steps so that Kosovo can become a responsible, democratic society built on the rule of law,” the SRSG said after promulgating the Laws.
The ten promulgated Laws are: the Law on Accreditation; the Law on Publishing Activities and Books; the Law on Industrial Design; the Law on Metrology; the Law on Medical Emergency Services; the Law on Nature Conservation; the Law on Establishing the Kosovo Judicial Institute; the Law on Vocational Education and Training; the Law on the Procedure for the Award of Concessions; and the Law on Foreign Investments.
On 27 April, the SRSG has also promulgated two important UNMIK Regulations. The first one is; the Regulation on a Regulatory Framework for the Justice System in Kosovo, which has been issued for the purpose of ensuring an integrated, independent, professional and impartial justice system responsible for the protection and application of the rule of law in Kosovo. The Regulation ensures the access of all persons in Kosovo to justice and guarantees that the Kosovo Justice System is inclusive and fully reflects the multi-ethnic nature of Kosovo.
The other regulation adopted by the SRSG is; the Regulation Amending UNMIK Regulation No. 2001/19 on the Executive Branch of the Provisional Institutions of Self-Government in Kosovo, which provides for the assignment of additional competencies to the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
