SRSG statement on the pipeline project in Suvidoll/Suvi Do

UNMIK/PR/1735

PRISTINA – Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Kosovo (SRSG) Lamberto Zannier made the following statement today:

The Suvidoll/Suvi Do water pipeline project will benefit all communities in its vicinity. Unfortunately, the completion of the project, which involves laying the last 700 metres of pipe, has been unnecessarily politicized.

Last Friday, after I held discussions with representatives of various communities in the Mitrovica region, all sides agreed in principle that UNMIK administration would manage the completion of the pipeline. UNMIK initiated procedures for a tender for the project so that work could be completed in the shortest possible time. UNMIK stands ready to continue its concrete efforts in the letter and spirit of UN Security Council resolution 1244.

More importantly, I appeal to all communities to cooperate fully and to refrain from any words or actions that would jeopardize the project. The replacement of an old leaky pipe with a new one is certainly in everyone’s interest.

Together we should make completion of the Suvidoll/Suvi Do pipeline a symbol of cooperation between communities that I can take to donors and development agencies to request further assistance to upgrade and make more efficient the whole water distribution system in the Mitrovica region, to the benefit of all communities.
