SRSG Visits Dragas Municipality

UNMIK/PR/938

PRISTINA – SRSG Michael Steiner who visited the Dragas Municipality, told members of its Municipal Assembly that the only way to create jobs was to attract private investment and that could be done only if Kosovo was stable, secure and a place where the rule of law prevailed.

During the visit, Mr. Steiner also went to village Rapca in the same municipality, where he met with Gorani community leaders who raised issues of concern with him, such as security and jobs. Later he had lunch with members of the civil society.

In his address to the Dragas Municipal Assembly, SRSG Michael Steiner assured the members “that though you are relatively isolated, you have not been forgotten and your concerns are being heard. I am here for that.”

The SRSG emphasised that if Kosovo were to implement the standards it would create conditions for attracting private investments. That in turn would create jobs.

He reiterated that the world’s attention had shifted elsewhere from Kosovo. “We should intensify our efforts on the ground. If we want help from outside, we must show that we are doing our utmost.” He informed the Assembly that he was willing to transfer all competencies, except the reserved ones by the end of the year. “But those who want competencies, must be competent”, he said.

Mr. Steiner responded to questions from the Assembly members on issues such as economic development, job creation and concerns of non-Albanian and non-Serb communities.
